Southwold Coastal Erosion

The coast in Southwold area is the responsibility of East Suffolk Council and the Environment agency. There seems to be a bunch of committees with fingers in the pie. The main policies for the Coast appear to be to to divide it into sections which are regularly monitored. There is then a Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) to deal with coastal issues. Southwold is covered by SMP7. The Policies within these plans can best be summarised as

• Take no action

• Hold the line

• Managed retreat

Documents for the SMP date back to 2019 and it is clear that all the issues are due for review. The District Councillor mentioned on Social Media that maintenance was likely to cost £10 Million pounds and that a recently commissioned report is currently under consideration .
